A Hidden Gem: Whispering Springs Nursery

Down a lonely country road, just outside of Mustang, Oklahoma, is my favorite greenhouse where I find the best Proven Winners has to offer. Whispering Springs Greenhouse and Nursery probably has more Proven Winners selections than any other retail outlet in my part of the prairie. Even though it’s about an hour south of my log house, as the crow flies, it’s still worth the trip at least once or twice a season. The owner always sells out by the end of June.

On one of my trips, I bought this sweet Calibrachoa, Superbells® Grape Punch. I combined it with Graceful Grasses® Baby Tut® Umbrella Grass in a cobalt blue, glazed container. It was absolutely stunning!

The first time I went, I got lost and had to call for directions. The second time, you guessed it, lost again. Finally, I used my GPS, and my friend, Helen and I ended up surrounded by fields of green wheat, on a gravel road, almost flattened by a local farmer. When we waved him down, he turned off the giant motor grader to hear us. You should have heard him laugh as he told us we were in Tuttle, a mere nineteen miles in the wrong direction. For locals, this is all very funny, but I don’t want to lose any more plant-buying time. Finally after consulting paper maps, I discovered there was almost a direct route. What a relief! Now, I can find my way to Whispering Springs any time the plant-buying bug bites me.
