Golden Lanterns® Pheasant Berry Leycesteria formosa
Part Sun to Sun 36 - 60

A great addition to the perennial border, leycesteria is an easy growing plant with lots of color. GOLDEN LANTERNS sunny yellow foliage has reddish new growth. Dark purple-red bracts and 4 long, pendulous flowers make it even more colorful. Also called pheasant berry, the dark purple fall fruit does indeed attract pheasants and other wildlife. In the north this is a dieback shrub; covering with extra thick mulch may be needed in colder climates.

Maintenance Notes:

Adaptable to any fertile soil. Thrives in wet conditions near ponds. In northern climates, requires a thick covering of mulch, and will behave more like a perennial than a shrub. Best if pruned in late fall or early spring. Tolerant of hard pruning. High moisture is best. Deciduous, dies back in the north. Can be fertilized in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label for the recommended rate of application. Some say feeding is not required. The plant has excellent vigor on its own. Best if planted in spring.
