Proven Winners® ColorChoice® is not just another brand of plants. They are a select group of new, colorful, easy growing plants selected specifically for the North American gardener. We search the world for the best new plants and test them to make certain you get only the best performing, most colorful varieties.
How a new plant becomes a Proven Winners ColorChoice variety
A new plant must prove itself as superior to get into the Proven Winners ColorChoice program. Novelty alone is not enough. Potential varieties are evaluated against existing varieties in side by side evaluations and are graded on the following criteria:
- Is the plant an improvement over current selections?
- Is it a healthy growing plant, with superior disease and pest resistance?
- Does the plant have multiple seasons of ornamental interest?
- Does the plant serve a new or unique function in the landscape?
If a new variety scores well in this initial evaluation, it's then subjected to a production evaluation. If a plant performs well in production, it's then made available to progressive growers across North America.
Where to buy Proven Winners ColorChoice flowering shrubs
Proven Winners ColorChoice varieties can be found at better Garden Centers and Nurseries across the country. Look for the distinct PW tag to be assured you are getting an authentic, true to name, Proven Winners plant.
Because these plants are new, you may have to do a little "plant hunting" of your own to find some of these plants. Some are in good supply at retailers across the country, while others are so new, they might not be available in your area.
If your local garden center does not carry Proven Winners ColorChoice shrubs, tell the manager you're interested in them. Good garden centers are responsive to the demands of their customers.
As a general rule, mail order and internet nurseries are usually the first to offer new plants. Good quality independent retail garden centers are usually next in line to offer new plants. Many good independents pride themselves on having new plants and a wide variety. When possible we have listed both mail order, internet, and local garden centers (by state) who carry Proven Winners ColorChoice varieties. National chains and mass merchandisers tend to be the last place to offer new plants.
If you see a plant that you like - let your garden center manager know you want it! Direct them to this website. As consumers we have more power than we realize.
