Gardening For the Cure

Learn how you can support breast cancer research while adding beauty to your garden.

Everyone loves smooth leaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens). They are adaptable native shrubs that flourish across most of the country. And of the smooth leaf hydrangeas, 'Annabelle' is a long-time favorite of gardeners across the nation, with its large, rounded, white flower heads borne above wide, dark green leaves in early summer.

But until recently, ‘Annabelle’ only came with white flowers. Now, for the first time, you can get a pink ‘Annabelle’ thanks to a breeding breakthrough from Proven Winners.

Invincibelle® Spirit II Hydrangea, a new variety from Proven Winners, is the first-ever pink version of 'Annabelle.' Invincibelle® Spirit II has dark pink buds opening to hot pink flowers that mature to a soft pink. The flowers keep coming from early summer until frost. Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Invincibelle® Spirit II fits into gardens large and small.

Hardy in zones 3-9 and tough as nails, Invincibelle® Spirit II makes an eye-catching, yet easy-care addition to gardens across the U.S. Like all smooth hydrangeas, it blooms on the new wood and should be cut back to 2-3 feet in early spring to encourage the new growth that will produce abundant flowers.

And that’s not all. Invincibelle® Spirit II is the only hydrangea which supports breast cancer research. Proven Winners is donating $1.00 from the sale of each Invincibelle® Spirit II hydrangea to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to preventing breast cancer and finding a cure by funding research worldwide. And they encourage you to donate too.
