Cape Mallow is native to South Africa and prefers somewhat cooler temperatures. It will suffer when it is hot and humid. This is especially true when night temperatures begin staying in the 70's or higher. Hibiscus mutabilis and Malvaviscus arboreus are better for hot and humid areas.

  • Grew the plant in a container on my deck in Mid-Michigan, zone 5b.. It blossomed beatuifully all summer and into fall. Grew about 3ft. tall. I did add a small trellis for it in mid summer. I'll definitely grow this plant again.

Above Average Superior performance, among my favorites, would recommend to others.

  • This is an outstanding plant needing very little attention. Very drought tolerant. I did not see any signs of rust or disease. Lots of blooms.

  • how can you state "heat tolerant" as a feature, and then state it prefers cooler temps. ? This conflicting info. led to the demise of mine, and I was following YOUR info. on the tag. NOT the plants fault!

Unsatisfied Did not survive, inferior performance or did not bloom well - won't grow again.

  • This plant survived the harsh winter of '09-'10 without special protection. It did not lose a leaf and started blooming within a few days of warm weather. Amazing and beautiful. I want more!

  • So far so good, this plant has been doing really well in my neck of the woods, but I am a bit concerned about it sticking around for the summer, since I live in Miami.
