Pinky Winky™

Hardy Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata

Award Winner

Pinky Winky has an unusual name, and an even more unusual flower. The large white panicles open in mid to late summer, and as summer turns to fall the florets at the base of the panicles turn pink. The flower panicles continue to grow, producing new white florets at the tip. The result is spectacular two-toned flower panicles that can reach up to 16 inches in length! This is a real show-stopper that's also very easy to grow. Adaptable to most soils and both sun and shade, Pinky Winky will thrive in most gardens.

*Even drought tolerant annual and perennial plants will need water for the first few weeks while they get established. Shrubs and trees will need to be watered for the first year after they are planted. After this, little or no supplemental water will be necessary when planted in the ground. No plant is truly drought tolerant in a container; water is necessary for all plants in containers.

Growing Tips
Prefers good, loamy soil. Adaptable to many soils, moderate moisture required. Blooms regardless of climate, soil, pH or pruning. Can be easily maintained as a smaller plant or trained into a small tree. Hardy Hydrangeas bloom on new wood so you can prune in the fall or early spring. Be sure to prune off spent flowers when they turn brown. Moderate to fast growth habit. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label recommendations for rates of application.

Very distinct, sturdy and upright. Good dark red stems and pink sterile florets at maturity, probably the deepest pink. Responded well to pruning, displaying the perfect pruning-dependent flowering sequence from unpruned (earliest), to medium and hard pruned (latest). Suitable for small gardens.
