Characteristics
Plant Needs
An excellent summer color item for the mixed border. The distinctive black stems add interest even when the plant is not in bloom.
This plant needs moist, well drained soil. Supplemental water may be needed in very hot weather. It may do better in part shade in more southern areas. Prune to shape immediately after flowering; heavy pruning is usually not needed. Very cold winters may damage the flower buds, so winter protection may be needed in very cold climates. The flower color can be shifted to blue with the addition of aluminum sulfate to the soil. Apply a controlled release fertilizer to the plant in spring.
