I put 3 of these in a full sun location and they looked amazing all last year. In the fall, one started to look like something was infecting the leaves - fungus, maybe? - so I took a deep breath and hacked maybe half the shrub off. I figured I'd probably have to replace it this spring. I was sad. Then, a few weeks later, something came along and ate the other two down almost to the ground. I was VERY sad. This spring, I was no longer sad - these shrubs sprang back and look absolutely GORGEOUS. I live in an area with constantly heavy deer pressure, and rabbit pressure that waxes and wanes - so its good to know that even if the worst happens, these shrubs can come right on back and look great the following season.

The flowers are nice but not the real show. I planted three of these in a new flowerbed by the street and have been fighting them ever since. I had thought the bed would be shrubs and permanent plantings. I made the mistake of planting some PW annuals. During the pandemic the world went by on their bikes or with their dogs. I have gained a following that stand out on the street and point. I want more annuals. The spirea get too tall in the front so with every haircut they respond with beautifully colored new growth. I have now decided to murder the 30 year old hedge and move these into replace it. A soft hedge that doesn't need hedging, blooms and has beautiful foliage.

We planted a Double Play Big Bang 4 years in our garden orchard- zone 5, in full sun, on a windy hill. At maturity, I think it was larger than 3' wide. It is one of our favorite shrubs! Beautiful colors change with seasons, starting out with deep orange and red leaves in May gradually turning to light green for the Summer. In between the colors are a colorful mix. The pink blossoms last at least a month. The shrub looks better after deadheading the spent blossoms. In the Fall, again the leaves turn a deep orange and red, making in a three season show! This Spring we are adding front yard landscaping to our new home. Because we loved how well this spirea from Proven Winners performed, we are planting 14 of Candy Corn Spirea as it is very similar to the Double Play Big Bang, but with very deep pink blossoms.

I have two of these as foundation shrubs at the front of my home (facing West.) They look great. I have had other Spirea that didn't do as well as these. Large plants and large blooms. The maintenance recommended here is exactly what I do. Shaping in early spring, deadheading after bloom, a little fertilizer and, of course, water.
