I planted and grew this plant this past Spring/Summer and it was astonishingly beautiful and striking. I was able to harvest many seeds and share with family and friends. Also, as an herbalist, I learned that the flowers and young leaves are edible in a salad.

Try growing them in the cottage garden style by planting them up against a wall or picket fence. Though their stalks are very strong, they may need to be staked if they are planted in a windy site.
Hollyhocks prefer rich, moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate short periods of drought. They need full sun to really perform in the landscape. Watch for Japanese Beetles; this plant is one of their favorites!

I purchased this plant in the spring '24 growing season from PW...it produced a large amount of foliage that looked amazing..never bloomed. On the other hand in the spring of '23 i purchased from PW the ruby colored one and it did very well and it bloomed the first season as it should because these were in the seasonal list ..bloomed all summer up until beginning of fall. I would not recommend this "black" hollyhock as it is not reliable to bloom in the season that its purchased..I do know that this plant is a bi annual however the site did not suggest that it might not bloom the season that is is purchased..as in the ruby colored one it did......so...I would stay away from this one unless you plan on a second year of bloom production.......Its my only disappointment on any of my PW purchases.
