Introducing Niki Jabbour - Eastern Canada Garden Guru

Hello from the East Coast of Canada! My name is Niki Jabbour and I’m a freelance writer, the author of the upcoming book The Year Round Vegetable Gardener and the host of The Weekend Gardener radio show from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Besides lobster and lighthouses, Nova Scotia is famous for its unpredictable weather, which can make gardening a challenge! My garden has endured hurricanes with driving winds that knocked over my fence and all my trellises (vines still attached!), blizzards that dumped three-feet of snow in just a few hours, plus everything in between. I also battle deer on a daily basis and can pick a bucketful of slugs in mere minutes! Yet, Atlantic Canada is a great place to be a gardener. In my zone 5b garden, I can grow a wide variety of ornamental and edible plants and am always on the lookout for new and exciting introductions that will add pizzazz to my plantings, yet be hardy enough to endure whatever Mother Nature throws our way.

In my search for outstanding plants, I’ve come to rely on Proven Winners. I know that when I see the Proven Winners logo on a container at my local garden center, I’ve found a superior plant that will really perform. In recent years, I’ve become a bit obsessed (ok, a LOT obsessed!) with hydrangea and have fallen in love with the whole Proven Winners line, including ‘Limelight’, ‘Little Lamb’ and Pinky Winky.

I also enjoy container gardening and the challenge of creating miniature masterpieces in a limited space. With my discovery of Proven Winners container plants, I now have the tools I need to create amazing potted gardens year after year. Plus, I can find inspiration on the Proven Winners website with their hundreds of ‘container recipes’. (Shh.. don’t tell anyone!) A few years ago, I discovered Supertunia® Pretty Much Picasso® Petunia, and never looked back. It’s become the focal point of my back deck where it blooms for months along with my other must-have Proven Winners plants - Snow Princess® Lobularia, Graceful Grasses® King Tut® Papyrus and Diamond Frost® Euphorbia.

I’m thrilled to be a brand ambassador for Proven Winners so that I can share my favorite plants and my passion for gardening with you!

I find it hard to believe that Canada is divided in to only two areas...I live 4 hours northwest of Toronto, but am included in an area that includes Winnipeg, Hudson Bay, Toronto and Newfoundland !!

I thought this would be a good idea, exchanging ideas, but I have no ideas to exchange with someone in zone 3...sorry Proven Winners.

Hi Nikki, I also live in the HRM in Nova Scotia and enjoy listening to your radio interviews. I know you are an intrepid year round vegetable gardener but I don't have your kind of stamina! As a child, I vegetable gardened with my father who sadly is no longer with us. I put in my first larger vegetable garden last year later than I think I should have. I can't ask for his advice now so I am hoping you can share your wisdom. If you are growing typical veggies like peas, beans , carrots, potatoes, tomatoes potatoes, corn etc., when should I plant?
Thanks fir your help, Wanda

Hi Niki,
I live in Lubec, Maine, which is closer to your part of the world and shares many of the gardening challenges you face. I, too, absolutely love hydrangeas and am working towards growing a wide variety in my coastal garden. I have had very good luck so far with my Proven Winners hydrangeas "Quick Fire", "Endless Summer", "Annabelle" "PeeGee" and "Limelight" and they require very little maintenance to keep them looking beautiful. I look forward to reading your future posts.

Hello all...I am looking forward to connecting to fellow gardeners.....I love to garden and also to photograph my flowers....I do veggies only in containers and have had really good success with them.

Although I am in Ontario, I am in zone 5a and I have a friend in Sydney NS who has a similar gardening climate. There is a Western and Eastern Canada blog but nothing in between !

Good luck with this site...I for one hope to be posting much more often.

Welcome, Niki! Although we live in totally different areas (Nova Scotia and Austin, TX), we both garden in areas of extreme and unpredictable weather! It'll be fun to read about your gardening adventures.

Thanks for your kind comments, Jenny! We certainly do live in opposite environments and I'm looking forward to reading your posts and learning more about what it's like to garden in your region.. All the best! Niki
