Snow Princess Lobularia is a Sexy Beast!

I love a good summer snowstorm. Not the kind with icy snowflakes that pile up and need to be shoveled, but rather a storm produced by the cascading mounds of Snow Princess® Lobularia, a plant often described as ‘sweet alyssum on steroids’. In fact, the masses of dainty, snowy white blossoms may lead you to believe that this is a delicate plant. You would be wrong. Snow Princess® Lobularia is a beast, but a sexy beast that offers a non-stop supply of colour, texture and fragrance (think warm honey) to your decks and patios from late spring until the hard frosts of autumn.

I’d always been a fan of sweet alyssum, but by late July the tidy clumps of white, pink or purple in my containers had fizzled out, fried by the summer sun. Snow Princess® Lobularia is so heat tolerant that it laughs at the sun (seriously... get really, really close and you can hear the tiny giggles), blooming it’s head off for months. What’s the difference you may ask? Well, Snow Princess® is sterile, which means that it doesn’t waste time or energy producing seeds, but rather just keeps on flowering. Also, the extremely vigorous growth of this award winning hybrid sets it apart from traditional sweet alyssum that reaches just 6 to 8 inches. Count on Snow Princess® to grow around 8 to 10 inches tall, but it will trail at least two-feet over side of a pot, window box or hanging basket.

Keep in mind that Snow Princess® doesn’t play well with everyone. It needs to be paired with other equally robust partners like Supertunia® Pretty Much Picasso® Petunia, ‘Sweet Caroline Light Green’ Sweet Potato Vine, Superbena® Royale Peachy Keen Verbena or Luscious® Lemonade Lantana to avoid swallowing up more timid plants.

Because the plants are so vigorous and well branched, Lobularia Snow Princess® makes an eye-catching filler or spiller in large planters and hanging baskets. Just be sure to offer her plenty of sunshine and water to support the rampant growth. I also give my pots a bi-weekly feeding with a liquid organic food to keep them in top form. Then, stand back and enjoy the sweetly scented show!
