I love that moment in spring when the nurseries are stocked and bursting with plants perfect for building my summer baskets. Virtually every color of the rainbow is represented in those rows. They are fresh and overflowing with vigor and enthusiasm. You can almost taste it.

Spring has hit the Lower Mainland. The signs are everywhere. Birds are nesting, the gardens growing and the cherry blossoms have been blooming their crazy heads off for weeks.  All of this has given me the seasonal urge to purge. There’s an item that’s been on my spring cleaning project list for YEARS. You know the one.

In the urge to keep our gardens clean and tidy, we often take for granted those who also call it home. The bugs, the birds and the bees are a crucial part of our eco system, and we have to be careful not to evict them with the yard trimmings. They’re the guardians of the garden and they pollinate our blooms. They keep everything running smoothly, with little to no intervention required.

In the dark of February, while the kids are bundled up and the weather’s still prone to fits of winter, I’ve pulled the seed trays out of storage and started germinating a few of my garden favorites. Every year I seem to grow more and more herbs. Their flexibility allows them to be tucked into any empty corner of my garden.

It’s a new year, and it’s time to get the this year’s garden planned. I’m using the winter months to do some plotting and planning, including renovating and expanding an existing shade garden. My east-facing backyard receives morning light, with a dappled mid-day southern exposure. I’m using color and texture to bring this dark corner to life.
