Hardy Zones

Zones are based on the lowest average temperature an area is expected to receive during the winter. They are used to determine whether a plant is likely to be perennial in your area. If your zone is equal to or higher than the zone listed for the plant, it will be hardy for you and thrive in your climate.

    Features

Wonderful texture and a narrow form combine in a tough, adaptable plant.

A great landscape plant, Fine Line buckthorn combines the feathery foliage of 'Asplenifolia' with the narrow upright habit of 'Columnaris.' Use Fine Line in narrow hedgerows for privacy, as an accent plant, or even in a patio container. It's a great vertical accent for the perennial garden, and the narrow habit is perfect for framing entrances. This is an extremely useful, architectural plant for the home or commercial landscape. This cultivar produces very few fruit, none of which have been shown to be viable. Fine Line Rhamnus is a responsible and environmentally friendly replacement for weedy, older varieties.

Very adaptable, prefers well-drained soil. No pruning is usually required, but may be pruned in late fall to remove dead or broken branches. Medium moisture, can tolerate dry conditions once established. Attracts birds in the fall. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label for recommended rate of application.

    • Great around a patio. No deer damage for us. They prefer our other plants.

    • I bought a Buckthorn tree in April and planted it in a large container on my patio. It was beautiful, but now has one side that is dried up and looks dead. It is definitely thinning out, am afraid it is dying. I water very day because the moisture meter says it needs it. I don't know what to do about it and hate so much to lose it. I have given it some Osmocote but it doesn't seem to be helping. Does any one have any suggestions?

Unsatisfied Did not survive, inferior performance or did not bloom well - won't grow again.
    • This is a great plant and does well. Your comment however about this being deer resistant is not true. The deer eat this every spring as soon as new growth starts. They eat so much of it one of my plants is very stunted. They eat it every year- I have had them about 4 years now.

    • I bought two of these about 8 yrs ago 1 died when I moved it - my fault. Bought another and they are both growing amazingly . Nice tight columnar - now about 10 ft tall. Very narrow base about 1 - 2 ft wide, top about 5 ft diameter. Very hardy in zone 7.

    • Wonderful plant, easy to grow, trouble free and highly attractive, our favorite new plant.. We put a couple of these into containers for their first year, and got dozens of comments and inquiries about the tall, feathery plants. They also look great in our borders, adding texture and shape unlike anything else.
