2024 Annuals

SAFARI DUSK PPAF PBRAF Jamesbrittenia

A color expansion for the series, bearing glitzy purple blooms with a gold eye on mounded to trailing stems. A relative of Sutera that can be used in similar applications with the advantage of far greater heat and humidity tolerance.

  • Full, healthy liners with no rooting issues
  • Good resistance to powdery and downy mildew
  • Grow in 4.25 Grande containers, baskets, window boxes and monocultures
  • 6-12” height; 12-24” spread
  • Part sun to sun
  • Vigor 2

Expand your options for mounded to trailing plants for hanging baskets and upright container recipes with this unique genus not commonly seen in the trade—Jamesbrittenia, commonly known as South African Phlox. In the past, this genus had a reputation for having rooting issues but thanks to advanced breeding, the Safari varieties are much easier for growers to produce. In our trials, we’ve grown them with the same standard protocols as our other annuals and they easily formed full, healthy liners. They are far less prone to powdery and downy mildew issues, but well-drained soil is important, so we recommend growing them in containers rather than landscapes.

Jamesbrittenia is a relative of Sutera that can be used in many of the same applications. However, since it is far more heat and humidity tolerant, it continues to bloom well throughout the warm summer months without cycling. It is also more forgiving than Sutera when subject to extreme weather events, holding onto its blooms through heavy rains and windstorms. Jamesbrittenia also comes in a broader range of colors. The newest member of the series, Safari Dusk, bears glitzy purple blooms with a gold eye. It complements the lighter lilac purple flowers of Safari Sky and the color-shifting variety, Safari Dawn, whose blossoms transition through rose pink and lavender shades while displaying a prominent yellow eye.
