Succeeding with Nemesia

Nothing says spring like these little jewel-toned blossoms! Let's take a closer look at how to grow Nemesia in the garden.

Nothing says spring like these little jewel-toned blossoms. Look for Sunsatia® nemesia at your local garden center in early spring alongside traditional pansies and spring flowering bulbs. They thrive in the cool weather, bringing the garden back to life with its vibrant colors.

You can plant nemesia in containers once temps are above freezing or plant them in the ground as a beautiful flowering cover for spring bulb foliage.

Here are a few tips for growing beautiful Sunsatia nemesia.

Bring on the spring sunshine.

  • Sunsatia nemesia is a sun-loving plant, especially in the spring. The cool, bright days encourge it to bloom like crazy.
  • As the summer heat becomes more intense, move it to a slightly shadier location that's out of the way of the hot afternoon sun.

No wet feet, please.

  • Sunsatia nemesia likes moist soil, but it doesn't like its feet to stay wet for too long.
  • If you have heavy clay soil, you'll want to grow this plant in a raised bed or in a container instead.
  • Containers that have drainage holes in the bottom are ideal for growing nemesia. Always use a good quality potting soil

To trim or not to trim?

  • Normally, there isn't a need to trim Sunsatia nemesia to keep it in bloom. It will naturally cover its old flowers with new ones.
  • In milder parts of the country where growing seasons are very long, you might notice tiny little seed capsules forming on your nemesia. If this happens, give the plant a light shearing across the top to remove the seeds and it will bounce back into flower again quickly.

Fertilize regularly

  • While the sun gives plants energy, the minerals and nutrients in plant food give the plants what they need to grow new leaves and flowers.
  • We recommend feeding Sunsatia nemesia with our premium water soluble plant food every third time you water while it is in bloom. Why do we call it "premium"? Because it contains EDDHA Iron and minor nutrients which keep the foliage green, full and healthy all season.
  • If you are growing nemesia in a warm climate and it goes summer dormant, don't feed it while it is dormant. Once cooler fall temperatures arrive, start feeding it again to wake it back up and encourage it to rebloom through the fall months.

Nemesia doesn't like to break a sweat.

Sunsatia nemesia is far more heat tolerant than nemesias of the past. If you garden in a cooler climate where nighttime temperatures fall below the mid-70s, it will bloom from spring through fall. If you garden in a warm climate or one where nighttime temperatures remain warm, expect it to slow up a bit when temps get steamy, then return with gusto in fall. In the extreme south, Sunsatia nemesia is grown as a winter through spring annual.

Pictured here is Sunsatia® Blood Orange, an extremely floriferous variety which offers better heat tolerance compared to older nemesias.
