This plant should be way more popular than it is, since nothing spectacular like this can handle a lot of shade. Giant flower spikes in the fall, and nice brown leaves all year. Ours grow in our shade garden, where the shade is provided by the corner of the house inset where the air conditioner sits, and the nearby garage. We have two giant plants along with ligularia, autumn anemones, and they all put on a great show at the end of the year. this garden gets a bit of light in the early morning for an hour or so, before the sun goes over the house on the other side.

Native to the edges of woodlands in eastern North America, Cimicifuga performs best in partial shade and moist, organically enriched soil. Some direct sunlight is required to draw out the purple coloration in the foliage. Water supply should remain constant throughout the spring, summer and autumn. Cimicifuga takes a few years to get established and reach maturity. Mature clumps should not be disturbed.'Chocoholic' Cimicifuga hybrid USPP 24,821

The plant was healthy when it arrived and I planted it well in a semi-shaded to shaded area but it quickly lost it's chocolate color. Customer service told me to place it in a sunnier spot. The listing states semi shade to shade but this is not so. I know that darker leaves do better in the sun but this plant really should be listed under sun to part shade. It was healthy and pretty green leaves but not what I was looking for.Rene', Maryland, United States, 1 year ago
