Abracadabra® Bigleaf Hydrangea Hydrangea macrophylla
Spring to Summer Finish, 1 ppp
B-9 is effective at controlling height and darkening foliage color. Prune soon after potting will produce a finished product that doesn't open up when it flowers. The key is to make the first prune at the level of the first set of leaves closest to the soil.
Aphids, Leaf Spot, watch for mildews
Big, funky flying saucer lace-cap flowers emerge pink and white and mature to hot pink atop black satin stems. H. macrophylla: Lower pH (5.0-5.5) will induce bluer flowers. Higher pH (6.0-7.0) will induce pinker flowers on Hydrangea Shamrock.
This plant needs moist, well-drained soil. Supplemental water may be needed in very hot weather. It may do better in part shade in more southern areas. Prune to shape immediately after flowering; heavy pruning is usually not needed. Very cold winters may damage the flower buds, so winter protection may be needed in very cold climates. The flower color can be shifted to blue with the addition of aluminum sulfate to the soil. Apply a controlled release fertilizer to the plant in spring.
