Was intrigued by this beautiful plant with charming lavender flowers this spring. It reminded me a bit of a lavender lantana. I bought 5 plants to fill in a mostly sunny area in our garden. The next week, one of the plants mysteriously began to wilt and died. The next week, despite good weather and plenty of rain another of the plants began looking sickly and perished. I placed a few Persian Shield plants around the remaining three expecting they would not make it, but they seemed to thrive surrounded by their new neighbors. Now into August the largest is about 18" tall and wide and all three plants have been covered with flowers non-stop all summer. If available next year, instead of mass planting will try using one or two of these in a mixed planting.

Once you try it, you'll be devoted to this Heliotrope. Let's start with the fact that it is simply a beautiful plant. That alone is enough to be enamored with it. However, it pairs that classic beauty with unexpected toughness. It is extremely heat and humidity tolerant, which means both the deep south and far north can be successful with this plant. The habit is somewhat upright, which creates a mound when planted in the landscape and it will flower over the pot edge when planted in containers. It will be a great component plant for combination recipes. Note: like many heliotropes, this plant is toxic if ingested.

Maintenance Notes:Use in sunny landscaps or containers. This easy care annual will benefit from a dose of controlled release fertilizer at the time of planting in the landscape. This dose of fertilizer will likely be sufficient for the summer season in most landscape plantings. If you are in a very long summer climate, an additional application several months into the season can be helpful.
When planting in containers an application of controlled release plant food at planting is also recommended. However, in pots this fertilizer application won't last as long as it does in landscapes. An additional controlled release fertilizer application after 2 to 3 months will help the plant maintain vigor and new growth. Regular applications of water soluble fertilzer is also a good option to take the place of the second controlled release plant food application.
If the plant begins to look a bit open or tired, an overall trim can help tidy it and will encourage new growth and branching. Trim lightly if needed, taking no more than 1/4 of the plant. Following the trim with an application of water soluble fertilizer will provide instant energy to help your plant kickstart new growth, branching and flowering. You may sacrifice flowers for a week or so, but the improvement in habit and additional branching will result in even better flower coverage going forward for the rest of the season.
Many Heliotropes are mildly toxic to humans and furry friends. Ingesting substantial amounts of this plant will be harmful.

The flowers are pretty but it remains small. It is early August now and the plants have been in the ground since the end of May. They are certainly not 2' X 3' wide and I don't expect them to grow to this size by the end of our growing season. They seem stunted and at their max height and width already which is about 12" x 8" despite almost daily watering and weekly fertilizing. The flowers requiring deadheading otherwise the spent blooms become brown and dry and make the plant look ugly. Will not purchase this again.

Fragrant, big, full, lush plant with myriads of stunning lavender blooms which delight the pollinators! We grew this at the Master Garden's Idea Garden in Urbana Illinois and it was a BIG hit both in the ground and in containers. I personally have killed so many Heliotropes in the past- they looked great in the store, but turned into sad, weak "shrining violets" when planted- they were fussy about soil conditions, pouted and died. I vowed to not buy them again, sadly. BUT ALONG CAME 'AUGUSTA LAVENDER' this year- a HUGE blooming wonder! Churned out blooms ALL season, was happy with all conditions- not daunted by some of the heavy rains and butterflies, bumblebees swarmed it! Gorgeous lavender blooms with dots of white and yellow make you happy just LOOKING at them. Very vigorous, but faded as the end of September rolled around- I don't blame it, i would be exhausted after such a CONTINUED show for 4-5 months also! Another MUST HAVE for next year!!!- and other gardeners agreed.
