zone 4 - MN Have grown this ornamental grass in two yards with mixed results. It's definitely NOT a maintenance-free ornamental grass. Although you'll usually see it stated that it likes full sun, I've found at both locations that it prefers afternoon shade and will not look nice if in the hot summer sun all day....it tends to turn brown. It will live in drought conditions but does better, looks better, if it's watered during long, dry spells. Don't overdo, though, as its root ball can rot if it sits in soggy conditions. It will need dividing every few years. I stretch it out to about 4 to 5 years between dividing. It can also look ratty for quite awhile in the beginning of the growing season from previous year's dead foliage. I've trimmed it back in fall and spring, but the very bottom of the plant still shows last year's dead grass. About the only way I've found to get rid of it is to "rake" it with your fingers and get out as much of the dead grass as possible. That can be tedious but I've not discovered another way to do it without sacrificing the new year's growth. Unless planted in a small area, masses of at least 3 plants gives the most visual interest. One plant on its own can easily disappear due to its smaller size and subtle color. If you like ornamental grasses, which I do, want a shorter variety and something in the blue, blue-gray color family, this one is worth a try. IN THE RIGHT PLACE and with some annual maintenance, it should perform well. If it doesn't, it tolerates transplanting pretty well, best done when its cool, either early spring or in September in my zone 4. Any later in the fall, the roots may not have time to reestablish and you risk losing it to winter kill. If planting or transplanting in the fall, water well before freeze up and MULCH well (I use wood chips). If planting or transplanting in the spring, keep it watered throughout its first growing season and, if possible, try to offer some protection from hot afternoon sun until it's established.
